Sako and Atif

Sako and Atif are a Syrian-Australian duo fusing Middle Eastern beats with contemporary melodies.  Originally from Syria, Sako Dermenjian is an Armenian classical guitarist, who is now based in Australia, where he sought refuge after the war broke out in his country. He was given his first guitar at the age of seven as a gift from his grandmother and it hasn’t left him since. When Sako left Syria at the age of 17, the guitar became one of the few constants over the next few years of his life.

Sako has performed for the Lord Mayor at the Wollongong Australia Day Awards Dinner in 2016 and was invited to play in front of a global audience at TEDx Wollongong in the same year. In 2017, Sako was accepted into a Bachelor of Performance in classical guitar at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Sako is joined by internationally acclaimed percussionist Atif Badria. Atif has toured with some of the Arab world’s biggest stars. Since arriving in Australia five years ago, he’s been regularly performing and running workshops around Sydney.
