Created by Yarrie Bangura, Aunty's Ginger Tonic originated in Sierra Leone, where ginger is celebrated nationwide. After the war, the women of Guinea would gather and make this drink together to take to the markets to make a living. Along with providing ginger tonic, Aunty's Ginger Tonic’s mission is to provide employment opportunities for refugees and people seeking asylum. Yarrie's own experience coming to Australia as a refugee inspired her to assist others to dream big and not to be afraid.
As Yarrie puts it: “I've always been determined to give something back to Australia, to show my appreciation for the second chance it has given me, and this image of a group of women from Guinea was the first thing that came to my mind. I want to contribute to the Australian economy, as well as the health and well-being of its people.”
Aunty's Ginger Tonic is a small business supported by SSI’s Ignite Small Business Start-ups initiative.
